CONRADH na Gaeilge Glaschú (The Gaelic League Glasgow) has announced the relaunch of its Cultúr Club initiative as part of their 125th anniversary celebrations in 2020.
Cultúr Club is the collective title for a variety of exciting and innovative initiatives being developed by Conradh na Gaeilge in Ireland to help foster a stronger sense of Irish identity amongst the Irish abroad.
These initiatives aim to assist Irish communities abroad in running the likes of Irish language and culture classes/workshops for children and organising cultural events for all age-groups through Irish.
While Conradh na Gaeilge in Glasgow has been running its own Rang na bPáistí (Children’s Class) for many years in the south side of the city, as well as its annual Campa Samhraidh (Irish language Summer Camp) in July, the launch of Cultúr Club in Glasgow marks a natural progression of these activities.
Maintaining a strong link between the younger generation in the Irish community and our native language and culture has always been a key focus for the Gaelic League.
The Cultúr Club will run weekly on Sundays in 2020 from 12.30 to 2pm, starting on Sunday January 12, in the Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre on Daisy Street. All children aged 4-12 are welcome, with each class costing £2 per child.
“The Cultúr Club will be a great chance for children to learn Irish and about Irish culture through songs, art, dancing, games and general craic,” organisers said. “Our experienced tutors will also now be using activity books specially designed for the Cultúr Club project, and for different age groups, to introduce children to our native language and to all aspects of Irish culture and heritage through fun activities.
“This is a project that has received generous support from the Irish Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Emigrant Support Programme
“‘Mol an óige and tiocfaidh sí!’ as the Irish proverb says: ‘Praise the young and they will flourish.’”
