A GROUP to support Irish musicians’ wellbeing during and after the Covid-19 pandemic has been set up.
St Cecilia Musicians Support Group, named after the patron saint of music, has been established by Scots-born psychotherapist and musician, Peter Devers (above). The online support group is open to all musicians, many of whom have lost their income due to the lockdown and ongoing restrictions.
“Many musicians have suffered greatly during the pandemic with hundreds of gigs, concerts and tours being cancelled,” Peter explained. “Many are sole traders, or part of the ‘gig economy,’ which means that they may not be entitled to benefits. The group is an opportunity for musicians to access peer support, fellowship and solidarity during these difficult and challenging times.”
Musicians have provided comfort to many people by offering free online gigs, music sessions and Facebook Live sessions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst the Irish public have enjoyed the rich pickings of free gigs and house concerts, the musicians themselves are often struggling as they try to figure out how to get back on their feet and get back to making a living in the music industry.
“Irish musicians have provided happiness, comfort and support to people of all ages; at weddings, funerals, special occasions and charity nights,” Peter added. “From the cradle to the grave. They have been our voice in times of oppression and brought us hope in times of despair. It is only fair that they have access to support during this difficult time”.
The inaugural St Cecilia Musician’s Support Group takes place online on Thursday June 25, 7pm-8:30pm. Musicians can access the link via eventbrite: www.facebook.com/peterdevers.ie or by contacting Peter on 00353877989253
