HIBERNIAN Football Club’s sesquicentennial year drew to a close with a pre-season tour of Ireland and the unveiling of two plaques in co-founder Canon Edward Joseph Hannan’s birthplace village of Ballingarry, County Limerick (see features section).

THE day after an uninspiring loss to Shamrock Rovers, my brother and I made our way by car to the cradle of the Hibernian Football Club—Ballingarry in County Limerick—to attend a service to commemorate the founder Canon Edward Joseph Hannan.

IN 2007, I skipped the afterparty celebrations of a wedding in Gweedore, Donegal and hitched a lift to Derry to watch the Senior County Football Final at Celtic Park, where the success starved club of my birth, Glenullin, was facing Bellaghy, the record title holders.

HIBERNIAN FC supporters have brought the story of their club back home to Ireland to mark their 150th anniversary, with an event in Limerick providing a fitting conclusion to a year of celebrations.

THE Men’s National Football League can be seen—from the outside at least—like the weigh-in before a heavyweight title fight. The pugilists get close, look each other square in the eye with maybe some shadow-boxing or actual pushing, before stepping off the stage knowing that the real deal is just around the corner.

AS HIBERNIAN FC entered the second half of the club’s 150th anniversary season an important landmark took place. January 20, 2026 marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Michael Whelehan, who—along with Canon Edward Joseph Hannan—co-founded the club on the August 6, 1875.

IN NATIONAL Hunt Racing all roads lead not to Rome, but to Cheltenham. The four-day festival, held in March each year, has evolved and grown to such significance that discussions and analysis now start many months in advance.
