Ceann Creige has many reasons to celebrate

AS CEANN Creige enters its seventh year as Scotland’s only hurling and camogie club, there is lots to look forward to and lots to reflect on.

The past seven years has seen massive growth in player numbers, club members and club recognition. From a club that started out as a means for Irish people to stay in contact with each other, the achievements of the club are nothing short of outstanding and Ceann Creige is looking forward to strengthening its ties to the community and building on the success of all that its teams have managed these past few years.

The success on the pitch is due to the hard work of volunteers and committee members off the pitch. However, the club also wishes to acknowledge and thank its sponsors, Malones Glasgow, Wet Wall Works and the Kevin Bell Foundation without whom they would not be able to continue. They were also delighted recently to welcome on board Mearns House Care Home who have joined them this year to help strengthen the ties to the community and connect with more people who can enjoy hurling and camogie. Together with senior hurler, Ryan Duffy, they are working on a project not to be missed so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Fountain of youth

Ceann Creige’s youth section is seeing its numbers grow at a rapid rate. Many of them enjoyed their walking in the St Patrick’s Festival Parade, as they stood proudly behind the club’s banner (above).

The youth team looks stronger than ever due in part to all the hard work being put in at primary school level in conjunction with the Active School’s team. The North Lanarkshire Blitz held recently was a huge hit. More than 200 children took part in the blitz and got to experience their first taste of hurling and camogie.

Thanks must go to Liam, Grace, Mary and Pat from Ceann Creige who have been instrumental in bringing camogie and hurling to the children during these school events. Their work in organising these blitzes, along with the Active School’s team and Oisín Curran—Scotland’s Community Games Development Administrator—has allowed for greater visibility of our sports across Scotland.

Gaelic games have always welcomed people from all areas and walks of life, no matter the country or city, and giving children the opportunity to play them from a young age gives the club the best chance of survival for many more years.

Training takes place for the club’s youth team on a weekly basis and there are many fun events planned for them in the year ahead. To help with that, Ceann Criege would be grateful if any adult who wished to help with coaching and so on would make themselves known to the club. No experience is necessary and all training will be provided. So whether your child is interested in playing or you’re interested in helping, contact the club.

Camogs aim to kick on

The camogs will begin their second season playing Senior in the British Championship and League. Despite last year not yielding any silverware, it is a season the team was proud of and one that was very much celebrated at its awards ceremony back in November.

This year, the camogs will continue their hard work and dedication on the pitch to improve on the results of 2025. Under the guidance and leadership of Captain, Orla Donnelly, the team know they’re capable of producing the results on the pitch and with the league campaign on the horizon, training is under way as the girls look forward to starting 2026 off on a winning note.

The girls are delighted to have welcomed so many new players, many of whom are enjoying that connection to home and Ceann Creige has always prided itself on being such a source of comfort in that regard. Social lead, Nicole Nugent, has plenty of events planned so join the club socially first and they’ll eventually get you playing on the pitch!

Hurlers hungry for more

The Senior Hurling team has also welcomed many new members. The lads are still enjoying their well-deserved break after the successful year last year. Bringing two cups over the border and back to Scotland was a proud moment for all involved in the club. The hurlers were also celebrated at the club’s dinner dance.

Captain, Jamie McFayden, will be looking to build on the achievements of last year and enjoy even more hurling success this year. Training will begin soon so keep an eye on social media for updates or information.

Some of the hurlers, however, have been involved in the Lancashire provincial side. Ceann Creige wishes them all the best in their campaign and assures them of the club’s support.

Now that the annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations have concluded, attention will be drawn to other matters and club PRO, Anna Clarke, will be posting a schedule a month in advance on social media platforms so that everyone can be kept up to date on club events.

Competitions

The World GAA Games are headed to Waterford this year and it is hoped Ceann Creige will be represented at the games with some players hopeful of attending.

The club’s annual hurling and camogie tournament will take place on Saturday May 23—Feile Ceann Creige. With over ten visiting teams coming to compete, it is set to be brilliant family, fun day out for all who attend. The day will have food, drink, music, dance and much more! Martin Hurls are making the trip across the Irish Sea again with plenty of hurleys to be sold and even a special demonstration of hurley making. It is a day not to be missed. Any club or business wishing to get involved on the day, please get in touch.

Ceann Creige has also started a ‘run club.’ Set up and organised by Ellie Agnew, Senior Camogie player, the run club is there to allow people to improve their fitness in a fun, social way with no experience necessary or obligations to join in with camogie or hurling.

So, exciting times lie ahead for the club both on and off the pitch. Anyone is welcome to come join us. The contributions of the Irish people to life in Glasgow will always be celebrated, which means Ceann Creige will always have reasons to celebrate.
