DUNEDIN Connollys recently welcomed Dublin side Naomh Mearnóg to Edinburgh for a valuable challenge match, as preparations began ahead of the league campaign.
Played in bright, sunny conditions in the first-half, both sides showed great intensity from the throw-in. Connollys settled well and edged a tightly contested opening period, going in at half-time leading by the narrowest of margins, 1-05 to 1-04. The hosts’ defensive unit worked tirelessly to keep the Dublin side at bay, while taking their chances effectively at the other end.
The second-half saw a shift in conditions, with light rain adding an extra challenge, but it did little to dampen the quality or competitiveness of the game. Connollys pushed on with some well-taken scores, eventually securing a 4-09 to 3-10 victory in what proved to be a hard-fought encounter.
A key positive for Connollys was the contribution across the entire panel. Every substitute made a meaningful impact, as valuable minutes were spread throughout the team. Individually, Andrew Lyons stood out with an impressive tally of 1-02, leading the charge in attack. At the back, the defence delivered a solid and disciplined performance, while goalkeeper Lewis produced a number of excellent saves at crucial moments to keep the visitors within reach.
Overall, it was a strong team performance and an ideal run-out ahead of the league season, with plenty of positives for Dunedin Connollys to build on in the weeks ahead.
Following the final whistle, both teams continued the day’s festivities with a trip to Easter Road Stadium to catch Hibernian FC in action against Kilmarnock FC. The group were treated to an entertaining performance and a convincing 3-0 win for the home side. Adding to an already memorable day. Irishman Owen Elding caught the eye with a standout display, earning man of the match honours.
The day was rounded off in perfect fashion with a joint social between both teams in our sponsor pub, Malones Haymarket, where players celebrated a great occasion weekend on and off the pitch.
