League football action is now in full swing

THE Gaelic Football season is now well underway in Scotland and there are some familiar patterns beginning to emerge even in these early stages.

The established powerhouses of Dunedin Connollys and Glasgow Gaels have both gotten off to their usual strong start with their Senior Men’s sides recording wins that suggest there will be little between the sides when the League Final time comes.

Gaels saw off Dalriada by a scoreline of 3-19 to 1-08 to get their campaign up and running before adding another impressive win on the road over Tír Conaill Harps in Cambuslang (above), this time emerging triumphant 1-15 to 0-04.

Connollys, meanwhile, began their quest for a league title with a 1-08 to 0-06 win at home to Harps, which they’ll hope to build on in their upcoming match away to Dalriada.

In the battle for the Intermediate bragging rights, Harps have signalled their intent to retain the crown they won last year by dispatching Dalriada 5-08 to 2-04 in Dundee.

Their next test will come against a Gaels Intermediate side still looking for their first win after going down 2-20 to 1-08 at home to Connollys Intermediates, followed by another loss at Clydebank by the narrowest of margins to Stirling Carrigans 1-09 to 1-08.

Carrigans, meanwhile, have had a bright start that suggests they’ll fancy their chances of reaching another Intermediate League Final. Alongside that win against Gaels on the road, the Stirling side celebrated a hard-fought win at home to Dalriada by a scoreline of 1-16 to 2-09. The only blot on their copybook so far has been a tough loss to Connollys Intermediates in Stirling, when they were comprehensively beaten 4-22 to 0-07 in a match in which they debuted a raft of new players.

As mentioned, Connollys Intermediate side have notched up two wins out of two so far and are looking like they have their eyes firmly on a tilt at the league title. A tie at home to Gaels and two away fixtures against Harps and Dalriada will test their league credentials.

Former league winners, Dalriada, like Gaels, have yet to get some points on the board but they have been getting closer with each match that they have played and will be looking to build on that as the league progresses.

While the Ladies have not played as much games as the Men so far, Dunedin Connollys have recorded healthy wins over Glasgow Gaels and Stirling Carrigans—competing in their first full season—and Dalriada have gotten the better of Tír Conaill Harps so far!
