Back-to-back Intermediate League victories for Harps

THERE are league victories, and then there are championship-winning performances. Tír Conaill Harps produced the latter recently as they successfully defended their league crown, overcoming Dunedin Connollys with a superb display of attacking football to secure back-to-back league titles.

The fixture had all the ingredients for a tense afternoon. The sides had served up a thrilling encounter in their previous meeting, with little separating them on that occasion. With the league title on the line in the final game of the campaign, Harps knew they would have to produce something special. They did exactly that.

The champions wasted little time stamping their authority on the contest. Conair Shannon opened the scoring after just five minutes before adding his second two minutes later, setting the tone for an impressive opening spell. Darren Collins then extended the advantage after linking up brilliantly with Phil Lambert, as Harps’ movement and pace caused Connollys problems all over the pitch.

The first green flag arrived on 15 minutes when Kieran Turner finished clinically to give Harps a commanding lead. Connollys briefly responded with a superb two-point free from beyond the arc, but any hopes of shifting the momentum were quickly extinguished.

Lambert split the posts before one of the moments of the match arrived in the 22nd minute. Lambert looked destined for a goal after meeting the ball in front of the posts, but his fisted effort thundered back off the crossbar. Quickest to react was Turner, who pounced on the rebound to bury the ball in the net for his second goal of the afternoon.

Further scores from Conor McCormack, Lambert and Ethan Friel kept the scoreboard ticking over before Shannon rounded off a dominant first-half performance with an excellent point from just inside the arc.

At the break, Harps held a deserved 2-07 to 0-02 advantage, but with a championship at stake there was no room for complacency.

Any thoughts of a Connollys comeback were quickly put to bed after the restart. Lambert converted two well- taken frees inside the opening minutes of the second-half before Connollys began to find some rhythm with a series of scores, including their first point from open play. Harps, however, always had another gear.

Friel and Turner responded with points before the latter completed a remarkable individual display on 45 minutes. Breaking through once again, the forward rattled the net to complete a superb hat-trick, sparking huge celebrations among the support and putting one hand firmly on the league trophy.

To their credit, Connollys continued to battle until the final whistle. A converted penalty following a foul by Michael Hawthorn, along with a handful of late scores, narrowed the margin somewhat, but Harps never looked in danger of surrendering control.

McCormack added another expertly struck free before Friel completed the scoring for Harps, ensuring the champions finished the contest as strongly as they had started it.

When the final whistle sounded, the celebrations could finally begin. After months of hard work, commitment and consistency, Tír Conaill Harps had achieved their goal, retaining the league title and cementing their place as the team to beat once again.

While Turner’s outstanding hat-trick will rightly grab the headlines, this victory was built on much more than individual brilliance. The defensive line of Michael McConalogue, Mathew Manison and Hawthorn put in a champion display ensuring that Connollys only managed to score three points from play throughout the whole match. Every player played their part, with Harps combining disciplined defending, relentless work rate and clinical finishing to produce a performance worthy of champions.

The league title remains exactly where Harps wanted it to be.
