Connollys leave it late to claim Senior League title

DUNEDIN Connollys retained their Men’s Senior League title following a dramatic one-point victory over Glasgow Gaels in a tightly contested final at Peterson Park in Yoker.

Played in challenging conditions, the game was always expected to be a physical battle, and Connollys set the tone from the throw-in with a dominant opening half.

lan Doyle and Conor Long were outstanding at the heart of the Connollys defence, putting in a series of tackles and crucial interventions to deny the Gaels any clear scoring opportunities. Their defensive work provided the platform for Connollys to build momentum as the half progressed.

With conditions making scores hard to come by, both sides struggled to find their rhythm in attack, but Connollys showed their quality when chances arrived. The experience and composure of Barry O’Connell and Chris Donnelly proved decisive, as the pair combined to give Connollys a valuable three-point lead heading into the interval.

Glasgow Gaels returned after the break with renewed energy and began to grow into the game. Their pressure increased as they fought to gain a second-half lead. It became a test of character, with every possession proving crucial.

As the clock ticked down, Gaels continued to push, but Connollys once again found a match-winning moment. O’Connell stepped up late in the game to land a crucial two-pointer, restoring the advantage and ultimately securing the win.

It was a performance built on defensive resilience, experience and composure under pressure, and it saw them crowned Scotland Senior League Champions once again.
