New football club is rooted in Donegal, but built in Glasgow

A NEW football club with Irish roots is beginning its journey in Glasgow, bringing together community, culture and sport under one identity.

Tír Conaill Football Club has been created to provide children and young people with a welcoming environment to play football, make friends and develop both on and off the pitch. While proudly rooted in Donegal heritage, the club is open to everyone, reflecting the diverse communities that make Glasgow such a special place.

The vision behind the club is simple: create opportunities for young people, remove barriers to participation and build a club that families can be proud to call their own for generations to come.

Since announcing the launch of the club, the response from the community has been overwhelming. Families have registered their children, volunteers have stepped forward to help, coaches have offered their time and local businesses have backed the project through sponsorship. It has reinforced a belief that there is both a need and a desire for a club built on strong community values.

A key part of that journey has been working closely with Tír Conaill Harps GAC and Scotland GAA. From the outset there has been a shared understanding that football and Gaelic games can work together to strengthen communities rather than compete with one another. The ambition is to create opportunities for more young people to take part in sport while celebrating the rich Irish heritage that has been part of Glasgow for generations.

Looking ahead, the aspiration extends beyond simply fielding football teams. Together with partners, the club hopes to play a role in developing Pearse Park into a long-term community sporting hub where football and Gaelic games can exist side-by-side, creating a lasting legacy for future generations.

For founder, Darren O’Donnell, the motivation comes from a strong sense of identity and a desire to build something with lasting impact.

“I’ve always been incredibly proud of my Irish heritage and the history that comes with my family name,” he said. “Growing up in Glasgow, that connection to Ireland—and particularly Donegal—has always been an important part of who I am. When the chance arose to create a football club, I wanted it to reflect those values and that heritage.

“We’re building a modern, sustainable football club with high standards on and off the pitch, but one that’s also rooted in community. We want children to enjoy football, families to feel part of something special, and volunteers and coaches to help shape a club that can grow for decades to come.

“The encouragement we’ve received from Tír Conaill Harps GAC and Scotland GAA since we began developing the club has been fantastic. They’ve been generous with their time, supportive of our vision and very welcoming as we’ve established Tír Conaill FC. It has reinforced our belief that organisations can support one another in creating more opportunities for young people and strengthening our communities.”

Although the club is only at the beginning of its journey, the foundations are already being built through the commitment of local families, volunteers, coaches, sponsors and partner organisations.

“The message is simple,” Darren added. “This is about much more than football. It is about building a home for the community, creating opportunities for young people and ensuring that the next generation grows up with the same pride in their community that previous generations have passed down. We are rooted in Donegal, built in Glasgow.”
